FAROE RAS 2020

Wednesday 10.06.2020, 09:00, Kongshøll

The Faroe RAS 2020 conference is a platform where Faroese and International colleagues in land-based aquaculture can meet to discuss current technical and operational challenges and solutions relating to production in RAS.

Today, salmon producers are adjusting their production to rear larger smolts in RAS to shorten the time at sea where lice and virus/bacteria can have detrimental effects on the salmon. In the Faroe Islands, significant investments have been made in the building of cutting edge, land-based RAS facilities, enabling production of smolts, from 500 g up to 1 kg. Rearing larger smolts, and thereby extending production time on land, is an innovative approach which places high demands on system performance and water quality, however specific knowledge on the subject is limited with many questions unanswered. There is a need to develop expertise in the area of RAS system stability in order to provide producers with knowledge and optimisation tools for the operational management of rearing environments.

The conference will focus on the main challenges within land-based aquaculture in terms of optimal production, water quality and fish welfare. Conference subjects will include; the effects of high CO2 levels on salmon smolt performance and welfare; stocking density limits; hydrodynamics for optimal operations; nitrogen compound tolerance limits and control strategies; pH, alkalinity control and CO2 limits for fish welfare and performance; microbial water quality and biofiltration, stress and fish welfare.

The conference will provide a forum in which participants can explore the most relevant challenges within the industry, engage in discussion and enjoy excellent networking opportunities with peers, researchers and suppliers.

Faroe RAS 2020 will be held in the beautiful harbour side setting of “Kongshøll” in Tórshavn, with the evening dinner held at “Silo” in the same location. In addition, the new SMJ headquarters will host a networking event, “come together”, on the evening before the conference, and the second conference day will include a visit to one of the largest RAS facilities in the world, Bakkafrost Strond.
